- Coral Gables Residents See Reduced Flood Insurance Premiums April 8, 2013
After an extensive evaluation by the Insurance Services Office (ISO), the City has been notified that its Community Rating System (CRS), which is issued through FEMA, will improve from a Class 8 to a Class 7. Once the City is officially reclassified in May, residents living within the flood hazard area east of US1 will benefit from an additional 5% discount on their flood insurance premium.
The CRS is a voluntary incentive program that recognizes and encourages floodplain management activities that exceed the minimum requirements. Cities like Coral Gables that meet the goals of the program have flood insurance premium rates discounted to reflect the reduced flood risk resulting from the City’s actions. Residents living within the flood hazard area should check with their insurance company after May to ensure the discount has been applied to their policy.

- Coral Gables To Begin Enforcement of Truck Restrictions November 27, 2012
The City of Coral Gables provided a grace period on enforcement of the City’s restrictions pertaining to trucks parked outside of garages in residential areas through November 30, 2012, pending the outcome of a referendum on the subject on November 6th.
The voters approved the referendum, thereby amending the City’s Zoning Code to allow parking of one non-commercial pickup truck outside of a residence, if such truck has no items in the bed, is not modified, has no commercial markings or equipment, and has no more than four wheels.
Effective December 1, 2012, residents who fail to comply with the amended restrictions will be subject to code enforcement.
For more information, please contact Code Enforcement at 305-460-5226.

- November 6th Ballot Question for Coral Gables Voters October 30, 2012
The November 6, 2012 ballot for residents of the City of Coral Gables includes a question asking voters to consider an amendment to the current Zoning Code requirement that pickup trucks be parked inside garages within residential zoning districts, which has been in place for many years.
The question states:
An Ordinance Pertaining to Parking of Pickup Trucks in Coral Gables
The City has an existing ordinance that prohibits pickup trucks being parked outside of garages in residential areas for aesthetic purposes. Shall this ordinance be amended to allow one pickup truck for non-commercial use to be parked outside of a residence, if such truck has no items in the bed, has no commercial markings or equipment, and has no more than four wheels?
If the majority of voters vote yes and approve this ballot question, Section 4-411 of the Zoning Code of the City of Coral Gables will be changed to allow a pickup truck for non-commercial use to be parked outside of a residence if the bed of the truck is empty and the truck has no commercial markings or advertising, no commercial equipment or appendage attached to its exterior, no modifications, and no more than four wheels.
If the majority of voters vote no and do not approve this ballot question, Section 4-411 of the Zoning Code will remain effective, and the existing prohibition on pickup trucks parking outside of garages within residential zoning districts will remain the same.
Polling place information and additional information concerning the ballot question and Zoning Code amendment are available by contacting the City Clerk located at 405 Biltmore Way, First Floor, Coral Gables, Florida 33134 (phone: 305-460-5210).

- Coral Gables Among 100 Best Communities For Young People October 11, 2012
The City of Coral Gables is among the 2012 winners of the 100 Best Communities for Young People, presented by America’s Promise Alliance and ING. Coral Gables was selected for demonstrating a lasting commitment to youth development through educational initiatives, civic engagement, and recreational programs. The national competition is part of the Grad Nation campaign, a large and growing movement of dedicated individuals, organizations and communities working together to end the dropout crisis.
Among the programs assisting young people in Coral Gables is the compact agreement the City currently has with the Miami-Dade County School Board which has improved overall academic performance, increased school resources and expanded community involvement. As a result of this agreement, all Coral Gables schools have a grade B or higher and a new International Studies Preparatory Academy (ISPA) and Coral Gables K-8 Center have been established.
The War Memorial Youth Center also provides a wide range of programs, activities, camps and special events throughout the year for children and young adults. The center offers a gymnasium, a fitness center, outdoor lighted basketball courts and roller hockey ring, an auditorium/theater, a dance/aerobics studio, child care room, specialized classrooms, and more. The City’s Parks and Recreation Youth Advisory Board offers young volunteer members, who are appointed by the City Commission, to meet on a monthly basis and get involved on issues of importance related to parks and recreation programs and services.
